Citizens of Heaven Elder Care Ministry

  • A much needed ministry for Lay men and women who are members of Michigan WELS/ELS congregations.
  • A way to work with your pastor to provide spiritual care to the aging.
  • A way to bring comfort to those in care facilities or who are homebound.

A lay ministry program from Martin Luther Elder Care Ministries

The mission of this program is to thoroughly train and enable lay men and women to assist their pastors in ministering to elderly who may be either in care facilities or at home. The key component of this program is a new online training course offered by Martin Luther College. This course is entitled “Geriatric and Care Facility Ministry” - the 2018 registration will begin in May. It is a three credit course and designed to achieve six outcomes.
Those who take this course will:

  • Articulate the importance of ministry to the aging, whether homebound or in residential care facilities.
  • Acquire specific knowledge of physical, cognitive, emotional & especially spiritual issues.
  • Develop individualized skills to care for the homebound and institutionalized.
  • Work as a member of a team consisting of the pastor, congregation and facility staff.
  • Reflect upon and evaluate their experience or involvement in geriatric ministry.
  • Explore ways to enhance and expand ministry of those already actively serving these populations.

This online course will be offered as both a single course available to lay persons, staff ministers, teachers and pastors and as an elective for those who are enrolled in the Chaplain Certification Program. The course will begin about the 1st of September and cover a 15week semester (September-December). It will require about five to seven hours a week. Since the course will be offered online and not taught “live” by the instructor, there will be flexibility in completing the weekly study and assignments.

Growing to Serve!

In June 2013, Martin Luther Elder Care Ministries (MLECM) began the implementation of a new Elder Care Ministry in the Benton Harbor/St. Joseph area.

The Lord has certainly blessed this program. Today, the Elder Care Ministry includes 30 pastors who together serve 60 different elder care facilities with weekly worship services. These elder care facilities are located across Lower Michigan and includes two in northwest Ohio. Total weekly attendance exceeds 700 people, many of whom are not WELS members.
